Helping Keep Seniors Safe & Independent: Home Modifications With Heart

One of the privileges of what we do at MacMackin & Son Heritage Home Repairs is that often, we get to support our customers during big life events - whether it’s updating flooring for a nursery, getting their home ready to sell, putting in those new countertops, or adding that deck they always wanted. It’s a great thing about our work to be a part of that.

But for some of our clients, the support we provide is about being able to stay in the home they love rather than a renovation or move. Whether after a surgery and physical rehabilitation stay, or simply because of changing mobility needs, safely installing ADA compliant mobility aids like grab bars, ramps, and fall alarms, and helping to keep our elderly clients as safe as possible at home is one of our specialties.

We recently tackled a project like this for one of a neighbor and client, whose father was being discharged from a skilled nursing facility with little notice, after a seven month stay in the hospital and several surgeries. Aware of our experience in retirement communities, our client reached out with the mix of happiness and panic that often goes along with this kind of news: happy to have her dad back in his home(which was exactly where he wanted to be), but concerned that another fall would send him right back to the hospital. With just a few days to make the house ready, our team visited the home to identify areas of high risk, and assess how mobility and anti-slip installations could make the transition to at-home rehabilitation easier and safer.

We discussed our recommendations with our client, based on our inspection of the home, conversation with the family and a review of recommendations. After presenting our recommendations, and with our client’s approval, MacMackin & Son Heritage Home Repairs sourced and installed grab bars, standing aids, a shower bench and other aids to support the next stage of recovery, as well as replacing flooring transition strips with alternatives that were more wheelchair friendly.

We always take a great deal of satisfaction from our projects at MacMackin & Son Heritage Home Repairs. Providing senior home mobility modifications to clients in Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Radford , Roanoke & Salem is always a particularly rewarding part of what we do. If you would like to schedule a visit to discuss your or a loved one’s needs to help stay safely independent at home, contact our office and we’ll be happy to help.
